A perfect day to be out (until the drizzle set in around 3pm), but flat calm water allowed for full scanning opportunities in various bays and out across the open water. The Studland Peninsular has certainly got a lot to offer currently, with Studland Bay hosting 20 Common Scoter, 1 Velvet Scoter, 1 Red-throated Diver, 2 Great Northern Diver, 6 Black-necked Grebe and 2 Razorbill. Off Jerry’s Point there were 2 Great Northern Diver, 1 Red-necked Grebe, 2 Black-necked Grebe, 12 Goldeneye, 2 Common Scoter, 6 Scaup and 31 Great Crested Grebe. Off Shell Bay there were another 3 Great Northern Diver, 2 Red-throated Diver headed south, 2 Razorbill and along the boardwalk the Siberian Chiffchaff was seen again with 2 Common Chiffchaff. At North Haven the two Purple Sandpiper were feeding and in Middlebere there were 3 Spotted Redshank, 1 Spoonbill, 420 Avocet and 11 Grey Plover. There was also a Spotted Redshank and Lytchett Fields.

The crisp winter’s day was met with stunning views of a ringtail Hen Harrier hunting around Turlin Point, Lytchett Bay this morning. The North Haven Purple Sandpiper duo continued to show right in front of Haven Hotel as a Razorbill could be viewed simultaneously offshore at midday. The Upton Country Park Stone Bench high tide roost totalled 689 Black-tailed Godwit and 349 Dunlin which were on the receiving end of prolonged harassment from a Lesser Black-backed Gull. The site also logged 38 Avocet, Kingfisher, Common Gull and 12 Little Grebe. Studland Bay was busy with 2 Great Northern Diver, 1 Red-throated Diver, 19 Common Scoter, 1 Velvet Scoter, 2 Razorbill, 8 Black-necked Grebe 18 Red-breasted Merganser.

The harbour entrance was well watched this morning. A dawn visit enjoyed Red-necked Grebe, 3 Great Northern Diver, 2 Common Scoter, 1 Guillemot, 1 Razorbill and 96 Shag in through and around the harbour entrance. Some of these went on to be viewed from Jerry’s Point, accompanied by 6 Scaup, 5 Common Scoter and 4 Goldeneye. The 2 Purple Sandpiper continued to show well off North Haven. Baiter shoreline featured strong winter cast of Great Norther Diver, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Sandwich Tern, 43 Brent Goose, 53 Oystercatcher, 14 Dunlin, 12 Turnstone, 2 Ringed Plover and Redshank. Nearby, Poole Park supported a further 3 Sandwich Tern, 15 Oystercatcher, 2 Red-breasted Merganser, 3 Little Grebe, Kingfisher and Redshank. Highlights from a trip to Swineham included 2 ringtail Hen Harrier, 1 Great White Egret, 150+ Black-tailed Godwit, 5 Curlew and Lapwing. Middle Beach also weighted in on the Great Northern Diver, with one seen along with 4 Black-necked Grebe and 10 Common Scoter. The Spoonbill count at Arne punched in at 27. Holes Bay really set the winter scene with impressive minimum counts of 1500 Wigeon, 200 Teal, 600 Black-tailed Godwit, 200 Redshank, Dunlin and 100 Avocet. PC World Drain added Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail and 3 Tufted Duck to the site daylist.

After yesterday’s weather, we anticipated a movement of Great Northern Diver into the harbour, but none were picked up during our cruise this morning. In Bramble Bush Bay at Studland, however, 3 Black-necked Grebe were present, along with 5+ Common Scoter and 12+ Red-breasted Merganser. The 6 Scaup were still present, this time off the Brownsea shoreline amongst groups of Red-breasted Merganser and Great Crested Grebe. Other highlights included 1 Razorbill just off the boat in the central harbour, as well as at least 1 Guillemot in the North Channel. There were also 10+ Spoonbill roosting at Shipstal Point. The Marsh Harriers at Swineham put on a display, with 3 seen at the same time, though we expect 4 to 5 individuals were seen during the course of the cruise. Elsewhere, 3 Lesser Redpoll were seen amongst a flock of Goldfinch off Soldiers Road this evening, as well as a Merlin seen on Hartland Moor. In Poole Park, 1 Red-breasted Merganser and 2 Goldeneye were also reported this morning.

Sorry about the late post, but we had a slight technical hitch. All sorted now though. The weather was wild, wild, wild and as a result ‘sea watches’ were the order of the day. From Branksome Chine there was a decent passage (in a Poole Bay context)  of Kittiwake with 54 logged, also 4 ‘divers’, 1 confirmed as a Red-throated Diver, well into treble figures of Razorbill with a few Guillemot thrown in for good measure, amazingly, only 1 Gannet, 8 Common Scoter and 1 Velvet Scoter. From Knoll Beach 2 Red-throated Diver, 19 Gannet, 8 Black-necked Grebe, 5 Common Scoter, 9 Kittiwake and 4 Auk sp were counted. Highlight of the day was the finding of 2 Purple Sandpiper at North Haven, a real sight for sore eyes having been largely absent for the last several years, bar one individual on the rocky groynes last year. When the rain cleared a Hen Harrier was seen at Arne.

A real day of two halves with a horrid, wet blanket across the harbour all morning, followed by a stunning, bright sunny winter afternoon. Interestingly, the wetter half saw most birds, with 2 Great White Egret again on Swineham GP along with a Goosander, 2 Marsh Harrier over and a Peregrine. The open water was pretty quiet but there was a Guillemot off Ham Common, 2 Razorbill off Baiter, 6 Scaup in South Deep and a Common Scoter in Central Harbour. The Brownsea Lagoon was busy with c400 Dunlin, c200 Avocet, 2 Spoonbill, c15 Bar-tailed Godwit, c50 Grey Plover and 4 Greenshank. In Shell Bay there was a single Great Northern Diver and 3 Razorbill feeding and just 3 Black-necked Grebe and a Slavonian Grebe off Middle Beach. A drake Goldeneye was on Poole Park boating lake and the female hybrid type Goldeneye was off Baiter. In Brands Bay there were 800 Dunlin, 250 Black-tailed Godwit, 112 Avocet, 19 Grey Plover, 2 Spoonbill, 180 Brent Geese, 120 Pintail and 300 Wigeon.

A proper winter day for those who joined us in braving the bitterly cold northerly winds on today’s cruise. The stunning winter birding scene rewarded our efforts with fine displays from birds of prey, an increase in open-water species and a nice sprinkling of Poole Harbour scarcities along the way. Marsh Harriers quartered closer and closer the boat as we meandered up the Wareham Channel and entered the mouth of the River Frome, 3 Great White Egret graced Swineham Gravel Pit (offering brilliant side-by-side comparisons to Little Egret on the deck and in flight), 6 Scaup and 6 Common Scoter offered marvellous views in South Deep, a Great Northern Diver showed well off Hamworthy pier and a Guillemot put in a star appearance in the Central Harbour. Elsewhere, 2 Goldeneye occupied Poole Park and a Sandwich Tern hunting around Parkstone Bay.

A bit warmer today, enough (in sheltered areas) for some butterflies to be active with Comma, Peacock and Red Admiral all seen today. A redhead Goosander was on Lytchett Fields and a first occurrence of this species on the actual fields we believe. Middlebere hosted the usual raptor fest with ringtail Hen Harrier, 2 Merlin, Peregrine and up to 3 Marsh Harrier seen. The west harbour Marsh Harrier roost also produced potentially up to 20 different Marsh Harrier this morning which is just incredible. Also in Middlebere were 5 Spoonbill, 1 Great White Egret and c200 Avocet. Whitley Lake featured 87 Bar-tailed Godwit and 3 Mediterranean Gulls.

A classic Poole Harbour winter set of sightings today with near perfect conditions this afternoon with a big low tide and zero breeze, making viewing out across the harbour and various bays an absolute dream. Around the studland peninsular, our ‘Winter Birds of Poole harbour’ ID course logged 1 Velvet Scoter with 14 Common Scoter out in Studland Bay, first settled and then all flying togther giving perfect views of all relevant ID features. Also in Studland Bay were 2 Great Northern Diver and 23 Black-necked Grebe were counted in the roost and a Slavonian Grebe was seen earlier in the day. There were also 2 Firecrest in the Knoll Beach car park and at the Shell Beach car park a Siberian Chiffchaff was along the boardwalk. Off Jerry’s Point there were 14 Goldeneye (18 logged earlier in the day), 6 Scaup, another 5 Common Scoter, 24 Sanderling, c15 Red-breasted Merganser, c40 Dunlin, 1 Greenshank, 8 Ringed Plover and c10 Turnstone. Meanwhile plenty of Brent Geese, Black-tailed Godwit, Wigeon and a few Pintail were also present in and around Jerry’s Point. Off Baiter this AM there were 2 Sandwich Tern feeding along the shore. At Arne, 2 Hen Harrier were seen, an adult male and a ringtail. Holes Bay NE was busy again with 1 Knot in with 732 Black-tailed Godwit, 114 Avocet, 100 Dunlin and 71 Redshank.

Plenty around the harbour today, aided by the fact we had a low-tide cruise this afternoon which trekked around the whole harbour and up the Wareham Channel. Despite the cold northerly wind, birds were finding the sheltered areas with 6 Scaup in South Deep and the 4 Velvet Scoter were off the south shore of Brownsea briefly. There were also 5 Common Scoter seen from Jerry’s Point but not from the boat. There were plenty of Red-breasted Merganser between Green Island an Brownsea, but only a single drake Goldeneye was logged. There were 5 Spoonbill in the Wareham Channel along with 3-4 Marsh Harrier at the top end near Swineham and a Peregrine was causing havoc. Along the south of the harbour and in the Wareham Channel totals of 200+ were logged for Avocet, Black-tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Brent Goose, Teal and Wigeon. Elsewhere there were 2 Brambling feeding at the Studland Ferry toll booth. In Shell Bay there was a single Guillemot and at the PCW Drain, 6 Chiffchaff, 1 Cetti’s Warbler and 1 Firecrest. In Holes Bay NE 228 Avocet were feeding close to the cycle path and off Baiter 57 Brent Geese have now settled. In Middlebere there was a ringtail Hen Harrier and a Merlin with 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Spotted Redshank, 5 Spoonbill and c200 Avocet. At Knoll Farm campsite, Studland a group of 10 Fieldfare were present with 5 also at Hartland Stud…..they’ve been in incredibly low numbers this autumn/winte rso far.
