The first rain for a couple of weeks today was quite welcome with lots of the river valleys and freshwater areas of the harbour looking pretty bone dry. We somehow managed to avoid the rain though for our Spring Safari Cruise this morning. We were treated to 3 different Osprey, with a fish catch in the north of the Wareham Channel and then presumably 022 ‘skydancing’ over the mouth of the River Frome, chasing off an intruder. Looking/listening to the Webcams, 022 chased this bird all the way from the Careys Secret Garden Nest, to the Wareham Channel and we then saw them head over past Middlebere. 1 Osprey was also seen fishing in Lytchett Bay. While this was going on 1 Goshawk put up the local corvids over Swineham. The Pink-footed Goose remains at Swineham Point and at least 2 Reed Warbler were singing along the River Frome. 1 female Marsh Harrier was flying from Brownsea across the open harbour towards Arne. With a female also seen at St Aldhelm’s Head today could there still be some late passing Marsh Harriers, heading north? The Forster’s Tern was nicely on view on the Brownsea Lagoon amongst c10 Common Tern and c50 Sandwich Tern. 1 male Wheatear was on the Brownsea Wall and c30 Avocet still remained on the Lagoon, along with, c20 Bar-tailed Godwit, c10 Dunlin, 2 Greenshank and 1 Knot. You can see our full list from the trip here. In Lytchett Bay 2 Little Ringed Plover were present, possibly having moved out of the Frome/Piddle Valleys as these have dried out extensively. 1 Reed Warbler was singing from Rock Lea View. The Ring Ouzel from yesterday were nowhere to be seen but 4 Wheatear were at Hartland Moor
A pretty dank day with April showers hitting by mid-morning. It was about time we had some rain,…
